Our Story
The story of the Barn Nature Center traces its roots back to the historic Doylestown Barn, the cornerstone of the Bucks County Poor House farm dating back to circa 1732, hence the name Almshouse Road. Once a shelter for the poor during colonial times, the farm also played roles as a military hospital during the Civil War and as a County Prison farm. However, by the 1950s, the barn stood abandoned and in disrepair, a relic of bygone eras.
In 1994, a new chapter began when Youth Services Agency (YSA) embarked on a mission to restore the Doylestown Barn as a community service and vocational training project for at-risk youth. Over the course of five years, with support from Bucks County, PennServe, and local school districts, the barn was transformed into an alternative school. It offered recreational activities, youth social services, and public education initiatives, engaging over 250 Bucks County youth in the restoration process.
The success of the Doylestown Barn project inspired the founders of YSA to expand their vision. Building on the momentum, in 2012, they established the Barn Nature Center, a second nature center following the model of their original center in Slatington, PA. Located at the Neshaminy Manor Center, the Barn Nature Center quickly became a hub for environmental education and positive youth development in eastern PA.
Collaborating with organizations like Bucks County 4-H, the Parks & Recreation Department, and local school districts, the Barn Nature Center broadened its reach, offering a diverse array of programs aimed at engaging youth and families. From adventure and recreational activities to hands-on animal interaction workshops, the center provided opportunities for learning, growth, and community involvement.
Today, the Barn Nature Center stands as a testament to its rich history. Its current program offerings, including Toddler Time, seasonal events, birthday parties, Summer Camp, and educational Workshops, reflect its commitment to providing meaningful experiences for all ages. As the center continues to evolve and innovate, it remains dedicated to its mission of fostering environmental stewardship, youth empowerment, and community engagement.
Additionally, since its inception, the Barn Nature Center has been dedicated to providing opportunities for youth to contribute positively to society. Through hands-on projects, environmental education, and community service programs, the Barn Nature Center helps at-risk youth develop empathy, gain valuable skills, and foster a sense of belonging. At the Barn Nature Center, young people become integral members of a community where they are valued for their contributions and where they can see the tangible impact of their efforts.
